Classical: Chamber Music Society of Minnesota

Sunday: Perhaps you know Sergei Prokofiev and the Wolf as a work for orchestra, but there also a rarely played version for 12 instruments and narrator that is more intimate and involving. The Chamber Music Society will perform it with a local all star team of musicians, including five members of the Minnesota Orchestra and two more from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. And the narrator is soprano Maria Jette, who has one of the best voices in the Twin Cities. The first half of the program will feature chamber music by Beethoven.

To shake the frost bound doldrums, the Twin Cities Jazz Festival will host its Winter Jazz Festival on Sunday at the St. Paul Hotel. Pianist Cyrus Chestnut is the headliner, leading an all star trio with Jazz Fest artistic director (and drummer) Francisco Mela and bassist Gerald Cannon. There will be music on three stages located in the hotel ballroom, lobby bar and lower level. Other performers will include the Jazz Central All Stars featuring Debbie Duncan, JoAnn Funk, Ancia Saxophone Quartet, the Dakota Combo, the John Penny Trio, Patty Peterson with Dave Karr, Solomon Parham with Steve Kenny, Chris Lomheim and the Acme Jazz Company. The event is a collaboration with the Leigh Kamman Legacy Project, with a portion of the proceeds going to the foundation. The project mission is to preserve and share the work, including audio, visual and written resources, of fabled jazz broadcaster Leigh Kamman. Paul Hotel, 350 Market St., St.

Rock: Never Shout Never

Tuesday, Feb. 2: Vocalist/guitarist Christofer Drew got his start as a teenager in the Myspace era, uploading passionate emo rock songs to the Internet that led to a major label bidding war in 2009. By that point, he had assembled a band, Never Shout Never, and hit the road with the annual Warped Tour. Drew is out in support of his seventh album, Cat, which is his band most mature effort yet, thanks in part to help from producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Ben Folds). Metro Station, Jule Vera and Waterparks are also on the bill.

Country: Chris Young

Wednesday: Like Miranda Lambert, Chris Young is a veteran of the mostly forgotten Star, an Idol reality show that ran from 2003 to 2008. Young won the fourth season, unlike Lambert, who placed third in 2003. Young landed a record deal as part of his prize, but he didn start making an impact on country radio until his pair of 2009 hits You Home (The Black Dress Song) and Man I Want to Be. After years spent opening for others, Young returns to town for a headlining theater show on the back of his fifth album, Comin Over. The title track went platinum and his current single, of You, features Cassadee Pope, who is also his opening act on the road.

Rock: Guster

Thursday: Long running Massachusetts alt rockers Guster met as freshmen at Tufts University in 1991 and found an early audience in the jam band circuit alongside the Dave Matthews Band and Phish. version of the Barenaked Ladies, maintaining both a keen sense for pop songwriting and a hearty sense of humor. On their latest album, they added a heavy dose of electronics to the mix with the help of producer Richard Swift (Ray LaMontagne, Andrew Bird, the Shins). San Francisco Vetiver opens. 6: In 2010, one of classical music most respected journalists, the New Yorker Alex Ross, wrote, the duration of the evening of March 1st, the Minnesota Orchestra sounded, to my ears, like the greatest orchestra in the world. That was after a performance of Jean Sibelius epic adaptation of a Finnish folk tale, fake bvlgari 4 band ring, to which conductor Osmo Vanska and the orchestra will return, joined by Finland YL Male Voice Choir and vocal soloists Lilli Paasikivi and Tommi Hakala.
